Analyzing Detroit Lions Draft

April 26, 2010

After drafting stud defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh (pronounced run stopping freak), and speedy running back Jahvid Best in the first round the Lions looked to add  starters and depth throughout the rest of the draft.

In the third round the Lions added cornerback Amari Spievey from Iowa.  He is being touted as a physical corner with a nose for the ball and is tough against the run.  His only weakness is that he is slower than you would prefer a corner to be, but hopefully his instincts will make up for his speed.  For a team that always seems to suffer injuries to its secondary, Spievey will at least provide much needed depth at his position.

In the fourth round the Lions found depth for their offensive line by adding offensive tackle Jason Fox from Miami.  Fox is rated as a project in need of a few years to get stronger and refine his skills.

In the seventh round the Lions took chances on defensive end Willie Young and wide receiver Timothy Toone.  Neither player is starting material, but both have track records of strong work ethic and could add to the Lions depth at these positions.

Overall I would have to grade the Lions draft a B.  They could have easily over thought the Suh pick and were aggressive to trade back into the first round to get Best.  Finding two starters who will be difference makers on both sides of the ball along with finding a solid cornerback in the first three rounds is exactly what the Lions needed to do.  I am disappointed they did not find a linebacker, but they should be able to add help through free agency.  So far this off season has been very productive adding  players to both sides of the ball with potentially eight or nine new starters.

Offense

Wide receiver: Nate Burleson (free agent) solid addition despite over paying him

Tight end: Tony Scheffler (trade) soft hands, and strong blocker to pair with Brandon Pettigrew

Guard: Rob Sims (trade)

Running back: Jahvid Best (draft) Schwartz really likes him

Defense

Defensive tackle: Corey Williams(trade) big body that will add much needed veteran leadership to line, and Ndamukong Suh(draft)

Defensive end: Kyle Vanden Bosch ( free agent: veteran with strong motor and familiar with Schwartz’s defense)

Cornerback: Chris Houston ( trade) young corner with something to prove after being traded from Atlanta, and Amari Spievey(draft)

I do not think it is out of the question to expect the Lions to win six games this season.  They do not have easiest schedule , but it is time for them to make a jump this season.  The number of wins will be contingent on quarterback Matthew Stafford, but as long as he can stay healthy and get better each week I think six wins is obtainable.

Side note, great video from Lions linebacker Zack Follett

Reaction to Detroit Lions 1st Round Selections

April 23, 2010

Surprisingly the Lions did what made the most sense and drafted Ndamukong Suh with the number two overall pick last night (I realize this was not the biggest surprise, but its always shocking to see the Lions do what they are supposed to do).  Suh was rated as one of the best players in the draft and should dramatically improve the Lions defense.  His ability to clog running lanes and put pressure on the quarterback are unprecedented.  The Lions have not had a player of this caliber on their defensive line since…Jerry Ball, wow, thats sad.  Let’s hope the Lions don’t find a way to ruin him.  After this pick it seemed like the Lions were done for the night, but a late trade with Minnesota got them back in the first round.

The trade

Vikings got: Lions 2nd round pick, #34 overall, 4th round pick, #100, and seventh round pick, #214

Lions got: Vikings 1st round pick, #30 overall and 4th round pick, #128

When the trade was first announced I was confused at who they would be targeting, but figured it must have been for either offensive tackle Bruce Campbell, outside linebacker Sergio Kindle or safety Taylor Mays.  Much to my surprise,  they took the high risk/high reward Jahvid Best, the speedy running back from California.  Best has been rated as the third best running back and has the ability to be a big play threat every time he touches the ball.  However his stock dropped due to suffering a concussion that forced him to miss four games last season.  Assuming he can maintain a clean bill of health, which may be easier said than done, Best fills a major need in providing the Lions with a speed back that can compliment current running back Kevin Smith and yet another weapon for Matthew Stafford.

However, as important as it was for the Lions to get a running back of his caliber I really can’t see that the Vikings, Colts, Saints, or Rams were interested in drafting Best.  Granted they mainly just swapped 4th round picks, but 20 spots is a lot to drop when you probably could have gotten the player you traded for from your original spot.  I guess if it comes out that others teams were in pursuit of him, and a trade was necessary, but some how I find this hard to believe.

Heading into day two of the draft the Lions, barring any trade, do not select again until the third round with pick #66.  I would have to imagine that they will be targeting the best linebacker, Florida’s Brandon Spikes, or offensive lineman, Hillsdale Jared Veldheer or Vladimir Ducasse from Massachusetts.  After trading Ernie Sims the Lions must find a linebacker in this draft, at least for depth purposes.  As always the Lions offensive line can always use more help.  If neither of these players are on the board I would assume they would draft the top defensive player available.

Heading into the draft the Lions needed to find starters and could not afford to miss on draft picks.  It would seem they have found two difference makers on both sides of the ball already, hopefully they can find talented defensive players throughout the remainder of this draft.

NFL Mock Draft-Updated April 22

April 22, 2010

The NFL Draft is finally here, these are my updated sure to be wrong selections for this year’s draft.

1. St Louis Rams: Sam Bradford, Quarterback, Oklahoma

Rumors are swirling the Rams are going to trade this pick or even take Suh here, but  I am not buying it

2. Detroit Lions: Ndamukong Suh, Defensive tackle, Nebraska

He is rated as one of the top talents in this draft and grades out as a special player.  The Lions could target offensive lineman Russell Okung, but I don’t think they can afford to pass up Suh

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Gerald McCoy, Defensive Tackle, Oklahoma

The only way this pick might change is if the Lions take an offensive tackle or trade down.  The Buccaneers have zeroed in on McCoy from the beginning.

4.Washington Redskins: Trent Williams, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma

Most boards have Okung rated higher and prepared to step right in, but I have found numerous reports suggesting that Williams fits their blocking scheme better.  No matter what the Redskins will be taking an offensive tackle with their first round pick, even if  they find a way to trade down.

5. Kansas City Chiefs:  Russell Okung, Oklahoma State

Ideally they will try to trade down, but taking Okung, the top rated offensive tackle, will be a nice consolation prize

6. Seattle Seahawks: Eric Berry, Safety, Tennessee

Offensive tackle is still an option here, but I don’t think Pete Carroll will be able to pass on Berry’s ability to transform the Seahawks defense.

7. Cleveland Browns: Derrick Morgan, Defensive end, Georgia Tech

Easily see the Browns taking Berry if he falls here, since he is gone they will improve their pass rush with Morgan.

8. Oakland Raiders: Anthony Davis, Offensive tackle, Rutgers

Al Davis is equal parts creepy and insane, an offensive tackle would be the logical pick so lets assume anything is possible.  I would not be surprised to see QB Tim Tebow, Safety Taylor Mays, Wide Receiver Dez Bryant or someone who doesn’t even play football go here.

9. Buffalo Bills: Bryan Bulaga, Offensive Tackle, Iowa

The Bills offensive line struggled to give their quarterbacks time or open up running lanes for their running backs.  Bulaga is rated as one of the top five lineman and best suited for left tackle.  I would add more but, at the end of the day Buffalo is a boring franchise and so are offensive lineman, plus he fills a need, jack pot.

10. Jacksonville Jaguars: Jimmy Clausen, Quarterback, Notre Dame

Weeks ago it seemed Clausen was destined to be headed to the Redskins, since they traded for their quarterback it would seem Clausen will drop to the Jaguars.  Jaguars are in desperate need of adding a player to put along side running back Maurice Jones-Drew to sell tickets and improve their offensive arsenal.  Clausen’s strong arm, confidence and experience running a pro offense make him a solid selection. Since the Jags have David Garrard they will not need to be forced to start Clausen

This team is looking to bring excitement to their team to entice fans to actually consider coming to their games.  Although they have a Tim Tebow boner, fans and ownership alike,  this is way too early for him(unless you are Al Davis).

11. Denver Broncos: Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama

Denver’s defense went flat after a fast start.  Adding McClain would bring a young leader who made numerous big plays for the Alabama.  He instincts and nose for the ball would take pressure off of Kyle Orton and the Broncos offense.

12. Miami Dolphins: Dan Williams, Nose Tackle, UCLA

After securing a receiver by trading for Brandon Marshall the Dolphins will focus on strengthening their defensive line.

13. San Francisco 49ers: Earl Thomas, Safety, Texas

Thomas has been rising up draft boards and many consider him to be just as good as Eric Berry.  Having the option of Thomas or cornerback Joe Haden will be interesting, but I think Thomas can have a more immediate impact.

14. Seattle Seahawks: C.J Spiller, Running Back, Clemson

Coach Pete Carroll loves playmakers, after watching film on C.J Spiller his speed, hands, and blocking ability will instantly remind him of Reggie Bush.  Drafting impact players on both sides of the ball will go a long way to making Pete Carolls transition back to the pros an easier one.

15. New York Giants: Brandon Graham, Outside Linebacker, Michigan

Giants are in desperate need of improving their pass rush as a Spartan it stings to say that Graham may be one of the best defensive playmakers in the entire draft, a player the Giants should not pass on.

16. Tennessee Titans: Joe Haden, Cornerback, Florida

The secondary is one of the Titans biggest weaknesses, dream scenario to have the top rated cornerback drop to them here.

17. San Francisco 49ers: Mike Iupati, Offensive Tackle, Idaho

As previously mentioned the 49ers need to shore up their offensive line.  Iupati size and power will keep pressure off of quarterback Alex Smith and open up holes for running back Frank Gore.

18. Pittsburgh Steelers: Maurkice Pouncey, Center, Florida

Offensive line help is by far the Steelers most glaring need.  They would be ecstatic to add a player of his caliber to their diminished line.  The Steelers will use the remainder of their draft to add much needed depth to their defense as injuries probably cost this team a playoff spot last year.

19. Atlanta Falcons: Kyle Wilson, Cornerback, Boise State

Falcons secondary has holes to fill and Wilson should be able to step right in.

20. Houston Texans: Devin McCourty, Cornerback, Rutgers

Many people have the Titans taking a running back here, but I think they will take McCourty to lessen the blow of losing cornerback Dunta Robinson to free agency.

21. Cincinnati Bengals: Jermaine Greshman, Tight End, Oklahoma

The Bengals will jump at the opportunity to add Gresham to Carson Palmers arsenal of weapons.  The offense came up small in too many games, Gresham will be a huge target in the middle of the field and allow WR Chad Ocho Cinco the opportunity to stretch the field.

22. New England Patriots: Sergio Kindle, Outside linebacker, Texas

Coach Bill Belichick’s defense is in need of a defensive player maker and drafting Kindle would bring the leadership and intensity Belichick loves.  The Patriots may consider a running back here, but I assume they will address that need in round two.  If Dez Bryant is on the board the Patriots may also take a chance on him

23. Green Bay Packers: Jared Odrick, Defensive End/Tackle, Penn State

The Packers defense started off strong and finished weak.  Odrick would supply the Packers with versatility and the ability to consistently pressure the quarterback and plug up running lanes.  Addressing an aging offensive line also must be a consideration with this pick, but I don’t think the Packers will pass on this special talent.

24.Philadelphia Eagles: Jason Pierre-Paul, Defensive End, South Florida

Pierre-Paul has been inconsistent during his stay at South Florida, but has the promise to be a solid, if not great player.  The Eagles may also consider drafting help for the offensive line depending who is on the board.

25.  Baltimore Ravens: Dez Bryant, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State

I know they traded for Boldin and signed Stalworth, but I don’t think they will be able to pass on Bryant’s play making abilities.  If the Bengals don’t take Greshman he would be an option here too

26.  Arizona Cardinals: Jerry Hughes, Defensive End, Texas Christian

Before signing free agent Joey Porter linebacker seemed like the most glaring need for the Cardinals.  It now would appear that the Cardinals will have quite a few options with this pick, but I say they turn their focus to their pass rush.  Hughes has a strong motor and has the ability to be a disruptive force for the Cardinals.

27.  Dallas Cowboys: Taylor Mays, Safety, USC

Mays has been up and down draft boards, but he won’t slip past the Cowboys who are in need of a play maker for their secondary. If one of the top offensive lineman falls here they would have a tough decision to make.

28.   San Diego Chargers: Ryan Mathews, Running Back, Fresno State

After releasing LaDainian Tomlinson and letting Darren Sproiles test free agency running back has become an overwhelming need.  Mathews stands as the highest rated running back on the board and could bring a consistent home run threat to the Chargers offense.  Having the ability to use play action and have a down field receiver will make life much easier for quarterback Phillip Rivers.

29.  New York Jets: Demaryius Thomas, Wide receiver, Georgia Tech

Jets are desperate to add more weapons around young quarterback Mark Sanchez and Thomas should be their guy.  Thomas displayed big play capability for the Irish and should provide an impact immediately.  The Jets may also consider Golden Tate from Notre Dame.

30.  Minnesota Vikings: Brian Price, Nose Tackle, UCLA

Intelligent player who has strength and motor to contribute as a rookie.  Eventually  Kevin and/or Pat Williams will retire, it would be wise for the Vikings to start looking for one of their replacements at this spot.

Tim Tebow could be an option here once again, too early and would not fit the Vikings scheme, but I could see the Vikings being interested in Tebow.  However the Vikings are in win now mode and I would assume they will not pick a project like Tebow, but stranger things have happened.

31.  Indianapolis Colts: Rodger Saffold, Offensive tackle, Indiana

Colts offensive line is not getting any younger, after numerous offensive lineman already being taken Saffold is the next best.

32.  New Orleans Saints: Kareem Jackson, Cornerback, Alabama

Late rising cornerback who may intrigue the Saints with his speed and physical play.

Detroit Lions Draft Approach

April 8, 2010

Rumor mills are buzzing that the Lions are talking to the Redskins about trading for  defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth.  Personally this makes no sense to me because it would be costly financially and a 2nd or 3rd round pick in this year or next years draft.  I agree that Haynesworth would be a difference maker, but after he proves that his struggles from last year were a fluke what does he have to prove?  A player that at his best is far better than ex-Lion Shaun Rogers, but has similar tendencies to disappear.  Picking up his 21 million dollar signing bonus on top of his salary and giving up a draft pick does not seem worth it to me.  Maybe if this team was one player away, but not for a team that is one of the least talented in the NFL.

The debate is on for whether the Lions should draft defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh or offensive tackle Russell Okung with the number two overall pick.  Personally I think Suh is a special talent and the depth of offensive lineman in this draft far exceeds the depth of defensive tackles.   I suppose its possible for the Lions to trade with the Seahawks(number six overall) and still pick a top offensive lineman and use the pick they get from them (3rd rounder?) to work a trade to get a defensive tackle.  It seems unlikely that the Seahawks are that in love with any player to pay more for and give up a pick when they are in rebuilding mode.

Suh Scenario:

Taking him number two overall and then wait see if one of the top offensive lineman or cornerbacks drops to them in the 2nd round.  However they should also be looking at running backs and any stand out defensive player.

Offensive lineman who may drop to them, 2nd Round: Charles Brown from USC, Rodger Saffold from Indiana.

Cornerbacks who may drop to them, 2nd Round: Devin McCourty from Rutgers or Kareem Jackson from Alabama.

Okung Scenario:

If the Lions decide to pass on Suh, or manage to trade down, then they are hoping Okung falls to them or taking the  top offensive lineman available at that spot.  If one of the defensive tackles or again an elite cornerback fall to them then they should advance in that order.

Defensive Lineman who may drop to them, 2nd Round: Brian Price from UCLA, Geno Atkins from Georgia and Terrence Cody from Alabama.  Price has the strongest potential, but all three players would not bring the immediate impact of Suh.

3rd Round

Depending on which approach the Lions take during the first two rounds and if they have gained any additional third round picks  from trading down in the first round the Lions could have a lot of options.  Ultimately if they have not picked one already this is the round they will go after a running back or cornerback.  The Lions could use depth at every position, but cornerback has long been a weakness of the Lions and they will need to find another back to compliment Kevin Smith.  I would put the emphasis on cornerback mainly because its easier to find a free agent running back after the draft or later in the draft.  If they have not selected an offensive tackle they could also add one here as well.

Running backs to consider in the 3rd round: Dexter McCluster from Ole Miss, Ben Tate from Auburn, and Joe McKnight from USC.

Offensive Tackles to consider in the 3rd Round: Vladimir Ducasse from Massachusetts or Jared Veldheer from Hillsdale.

Cornerback/Secondary to consider in the 3rd Round: Patrick Robinson from Florida State.  Myron Rolle*, Safety from Florida State.

*In most cases Rolle would probably be a late first round pick, however he missed his senior season to accept the Rhodes Scholar that was presented to him to study brain surgery.  His commitment to football has since been questioned and thus responsible for causing his draft stock to plummet.  Rolle is an outstanding player and leader and if he is on the board in the 3rd round the Lions should not hesitate to select him.

4th, 5th, and 7th round picks:

These picks should be all about adding depth or finding a diamond in the rough.  If the Lions do not draft a running back before the 5th round these three players are guys that I would consider taking a flyer on: 5th Round: LeBarrette Blount from Oregon(suspended for punching opposing player). 7th Rond: Stafon Johnson from USC(suffered freak weight room injury).  Mr Irrelevant(last overall pick): Brandon Minor from Michigan(history of injuries).

Mock Draft-Updated April 7th

April 7, 2010

1. St Louis Rams: Sam Bradford, Quarterback, Oklahoma

The Rams have many needs and DT Ndamukong Suh would be the safe choice on paper.  However the number one overall pick always comes down to money.  Just like most teams before them they will undoubtedly try to trade this pick, but will find no suiters.  Bradford’s accuracy and his ability to sell tickets will dominate this decision.

Other Possible Targets:

Jimmy Clausen, Quarterback, Notre Dame: If the Rams decide to go after a QB they will have to consider Clausen.  His rocket arm and three years of experience in a pro style offense will be intriguing.  However I think his cockiness and overall demeanor will allow the Rams to pass on him.  Clausen could easily be the better pro, but it depends on his situation, and how he makes the most of it.

Ndamukong Suh, Defensive Tackle, Nebraska:  The scariest part of scouting a player like Suh will not show up on the game tape, but on the stats that suggest that (thanks to this website http://walterfootball.com/nfldraftquarterbackriskmyth.php ) defensive tackles have a higher bust rate that quarterbacks.  The numbers are close

2. Detroit Lions: Ndamukong Suh, Defensive Tackle, Nebraska

Suh has the ability to single handedly transform the Lions defense.  His ability to stop the run and obtain tackles for loss would hide a lot of the Lions current weaknesses.

Other Possible Targets:

Russell Okung, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma State:  Widely regarded as the best offensive tackle in this draft and the far safer pick for the Lions.  I think this will be the the Lions toughest player to pass up.  While the defense can use all the help it can get, the Lions also can not afford to miss on this pick.  Okung would help keep Matthew Stafford upright and also open huge running lanes.

Gerald McCoy, Defensive Tackle, Oklahoma: Maybe the most versatile defensive player in this draft.  Not only can he be used in a 3-4 or 4-3 defense, but you can also you use him at defensive tackle or as a lineman. If Suh is on the board and the Lions decide to go with defense he is the pick.

Trade Down:  With it appearing likely that the Rams will take Bradford and the Redskins trading for McNabb the Lions only trade partner may be the Seahawks at number six.  As speculated by several sources (Peter King, Profootballtalk.com etc) if the Lions sign DT Anthony Hargrove from the Saints an offensive tackle becomes the Lions focus.  Hargrove had 44 tackles, 5 sacks for the Saints last year and is only 26

3. Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Gerald McCoy, Defensive Tackle, Oklahoma

This is a place where we could see a trade happen.  The Redskins are clearly looking to obtain their franchise quarterback in this draft.  However if Bradford and Clausen are still on the board look for another team to sneak into this spot before the Redskins.  Assuming the Bucs stay in the top six after any trade I still think McCoy will be there for the taking.  He fits their defensive system and has the ability to be a disruptive force from day one.

Other Possible Targets:

Eric Berry, Safety, Tennessee : Rated as the best safety prospect and would also be a difference maker for their defense from day one.  Usually teams shy away from paying a safety top three money.

4.Washington Redskins: Russell Okung, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma State

Coach Mike Shannahan likes over confident quarterbacks, see Elway, John and Cutler, Jay, and trading for McNabb allows the Redskins to improve their offensive line.  The Redskins had one of the worst offensive lines last year and Okung could instantly stabilizes the left side.  Other than the Rams selecting Bradford this seems like the second safest pick of the entire draft.

5. Kansas City Chiefs:  Anthony Davis, Offensive Tackle, Rutgers

Since the Chiefs got their franchise quarterback last season by trading for Matt Cassel and GM Scot Pioli knows the importance of building solid offensive and defensive lines Davis is the pick.  Cassel was sacked over 40 times last season, some of the blame can be place on the QB, but the Chiefs O-line is one of the worst in the league.

Other Possible Targets: Eric Berry, Safety, Tennessee:  Safety is another need for the Chiefs and Berry is the best in this draft.  His ability to consistently disrupt teams passing games would instantly make the Chiefs secondary better.

Trade Down:  Offensive tackle is their main priority with their first pick.  Ideally they would try to move to at least the 10th slot and take offensive tackle Bruce Campbell from Maryland or hope Anthony Davis is still on the board.  Unless a team falls in love with Jimmy Clausen, the Chiefs are stuck with this pick.

6. Seattle Seahawks: Eric Berry, Safety, Tennessee

With Bradford off the board and the Seahawks trading for Charlie Whitehurst this makes this pick an easy one for new head coach Pete Carroll.  At USC he had the luxury of his defenses being led by game changing safeties like Troy Polamalu or Taylor Mays.  Although Mays is available in this draft Berry rates higher.

Other Possible Targets:

Offensive Lineman:  If the Chiefs select Berry or an offensive tackle the Seahawks may also deem offensive tackle a more glaring need.

7. Cleveland Browns: Joe Haden, Cornerback, Florida

The Browns need talent, when your kick returner, Joshua Cribbs, is the most talented player on your team you have a problem.  Since the top quarterbacks are off the board the Browns will look to find a playmaker.  Since running back Jerome Harrison finished the season strong and they traded away Braylon Edwards during the season wide receiver makes the most sense here.  However the Browns need as close to a sure thing as they can get and cannot afford to take a risk here. Haden has shown the ability to be a shutdown corner during his three years at Florida.  Although he posted slow .40 times at the combine the Browns will trust his game day speed.

Other Possible Targets:

Dez Bryant, Wide Receiever, Oklahoma State: Do to NCAA sancations Bryant missed the entire season, however his 6′ 2″ frame and dominate production when he did play will be enticing, especially since the Browns traded away Braylon Edwards last season and are still looking for his replacement.

8. Oakland Raiders: Taylor Mays, Safety, USC

Mays was considered by many to be a top five pick in last years draft.  He instead chose to return for his senior season, a decision many considered to be a mistake.  Mays struggled his senior year along with USC’s defense, clearly missing the linebacker trio of Brian Cushing, Rey Maualuga, and Clay Matthews.  Mays turned in a solid work out at the combine and will rely on his body of work at USC over his senior season.  The Raiders are known for taking chances in the draft and will hope this year they guess correctly.

Other Possible Targets:

Bryan Bulaga, Offensive Tackle, Iowa or Trent Williams, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma: Both solid options to improve the Raiders offense, but neither seeming worthy of a top ten pick.

Other Possible Targets:

Derrick Morgan, Defensive End, Georgia Tech: Morgan was voted the ACC defensive player of the year and could make a lot of noise on the defensive side of the ball.  His motor has been questioned at times, but he is the safe pick here.

Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama: Rated as the best linebacker in the draft McClain would bring leadership and talent to the Jaguars defense.

Wide Receiever: Golden Tate from Notre Dame, or Dez Bryant from Oklahoma State may also be seriously considered for their play making ability.  This team is looking to bring excitement to their team to entice fans to actually consider coming to their games.  Although they have a Tim Tebow boner, fans and ownership alike,  this is way too early for him.

Other Possible Targets:

If they find a team that is willing to surrender a first round pick for Brandon Marshall I would expect Denver to target Dez Bryant or Golden Tate with this pick.

12. Miami Dolphins: Dez Bryant, Wide Receiver, Oklahoma State

Dolphins offensive attack lived and died by the wildcat formation.  By adding Bryant quarterback Chad Henne could spread the field and make their offense even more unpredictable.

Other Possible Target:

Rolando McClain, ILB, Alabama:  Linebacker is another need for the dolphins and if he is one the board and Bryant is gone the Dolphins would have no complaints taking McClain.

13. San Francisco 49ers: Carlos Dunlap, Defensive End, Florida

While Dunlap has had his share of off the field issues he is an explosive player than Coach Mike Singletary would love see brining pressure to the quarterback.  With two picks in the top 17 I would assume they would grab the highest rated player here and then look for an offensive lineman with the next pick.  Dunlap is rated as one of the top DE’s in this draft and his side and speed would make him a force in the NFC West.

Other Possible Targets:

Earl Thomas, Cornerback, Texas or Everson Griffen, Defensive End, USC:  Both players would also help improve the 49ers defense as they attempt to challenge the Cardinals for the division, however I see Dunlap making a more immediate impact.

Other Possible Targets:

Trent Williams, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma:  The Seahawks are also need to begin rebuilding their aging offensive line.  Williams would be solid value here, but I think the opportunity to pass on a player like Spiller is too great of a risk.

15. New York Giants: Everson Griffen, Defensive End, USC

The Giants defense took a major step backwards last season, repairing it with new blood will be key to their offseason.  Griffen would draw create match up problems for teams having to decide which player to double team him or veteran Osi Umenyiora.

16. Tennessee Titans: Earl Thomas, Cornerback, Texas

This may be a reach for Thomas, but he is rated as the second best cornerback in this draft and its a huge need for the Titans defense.  Last season they found there defense having a hard time getting off the field do to poor corner play from CB Nick Harper.

Other Possible Targets:

If the Titans decide this is too soon for Thomas and cornerback Joe Haden is also gone I would assume the Titans would look to add a solid defensive player like defensive tackle Dan Williams from Tennessee or outside linebacker Sergio Kindle from Texas to replace the departure of Kevin Bullocks.

17. San Francisco 49ers: Trent Williams, Offensive Tackle, Oklahoma

As previously mentioned the 49ers need to shore up their offensive line.  Williams size and power will keep pressure off of quarterback Alex Smith and open up holes for running back Frank Gore.

Other Possible Target:

Anthony Davis, Offensive Tackle, Rutgers: Both players are similar and the 49ers would be happy to have either player.  I flipped a coin and Williams won, while this seems ridiculous based on the way some of these teams draft I did not consider this idea to be that far fetched.

18. Pittsburgh Steelers: Bruce Campbell, Offensive Tackle, Maryland

Offensive line help is by far the Steelers most glaring need.  If Campbell lasts this long they will be ecstatic to add a player of his caliber to their diminished line.  The Steelers will use the remainder of their draft to add much needed depth to their defense as injuries probably cost this team a playoff spot last year.

19. Atlanta Falcons: Brandon Graham, Defensive End, University of Michigan

The Falcons could look to upgrade their offensive line, but I feel they will not be able to pass on Graham’s ability to improve their defense.  As a Spartan it pains me to say that Graham may be one of the best defensive playmakers in the entire draft, a player the Falcons should not pass on.

20. Houston Texans: Kyle Wilson, Cornerback, Boise State

Similar to the Titans the Titans defense had trouble getting off the field do to poor cornerback play.  The Titans may try to trade down in hopes of gaining picks and Wilson still being available, but his ball hawking skills and speed allow him to match up nicely with any wide receiver.

Other Possible Target:

Offensive line help

22. New England Patriots: Brandon Spikes, Linebacker, Florida

Coach Bill Belichick’s defense is in need of a defensive player maker and drafting Spikes would bring the leadership and intensity Belichick loves.  The Patriots may consider a running back here, but I assume they will address that need in round two.

Other Possible Target:

Jared Odrick, Defensive End/Tackle, Penn State: Odrick would help this team replace trading Richard Seymour, however I think the Patriots will prefer Brandon Graham’s attitude and skill set over Odrick if he some how slips to them here.

25.  Baltimore Ravens: Patrick Robinson, Cornerback, Florida State

Has all of the tools to be a physical corner and the speed to match.  After signing receivers Donte Stalworth and trading for Anquan Boldin the Ravens can and should focus on improving their secondary.

Other Possible Target:

Jermaine Gresham, Tight End, Oklahoma:  If he drops to this point the Ravens should not hesitate to grab him.  Veteran Todd Heap has show signs of slowing down the past few seasons and a replacement is needed.

Other Possible Targets:

Jimmy Clausen, Quarterback, Notre Dame: If he some how slipped this far the Cardinals may be forced to consider him.  However, I assume they will consider more pressing needs.

Tim Tebow, Quarterback, Florida: I think any team taking him in the 1st round would be a reach, but it sounds more and more likely that some team will take him with a late 1st round pick.  If the Cardinals do not feel comfortable with Leinart and Clausen is off the bored the Cardinals could easily fall for Tebow’s intangibles.

Sean Witherspoon, Inside Linebacker, Missouri: Witherspoon could also fill the gap being left by Dansby, although he has not received the same fan far his stats, size and speed match up with Spikes’.  If the Cardinals have issues with Spikes on and off the field issues Witherspoon is their guy,

27.  Dallas Cowboys: Brian Price, Defensive Tackle, UCLA

Kind of a streaky player, but when surrounded by a veteran team of play makers maybe he will become more consistently dominant.  I think they are in position to take the best player available for the offensive or defensive lines.

Other Possible Targets: Trade down, unless someone slides to them here

Other Possible Targets:

Jahvid Best, Running Back, California and Jonathon Dwyer, Running Back, Georgia Tech

29.  New York Jets: Golden Tate, Wide Receiver, Notre Dame

Jets are desperate to add more weapons around young quarterback Mark Sanchez and Tate should be their guy.  Tate displayed big play capability for the Irish and should provide an impact immediately.  The Jets get lucky that the Ravens addressed their WR needs via trade and free agency which would allow Tate to fall to them here.

Other Possible Targets:

Arrelious Benn, Wide Receiver, Illinois: Solid Wide Receiver as well

30.  Minnesota Vikings: Dan Williams, Defensive Tackle, Tennessee

Intelligent player who has strength and motor to contribute as a rookie.  Eventually  Kevin and/or Pat Williams will retire, it would be wise for the Vikings to start looking for one of their replacements at this spot.  Yes, I picked him because he his last name is Williams and plays defensive end, weird fetish for the Vikings apparently.

Other Possible Targets:

Use this pick in a trade to sweeten the pot for a quarterback if necessary, my guess is they won’t have answer from their wavering prima donna  QB by the draft.

Tim Tebow, Quarterback, Florida: Once again, too early and would not fit the Vikings scheme, but I could see the Vikings being interested in Tebow.  However the Vikings are in win now mode and I would assume they will not pick a project like Tebow, but stranger things have happened.

31.  Indianapolis Colts: Perrish Cox, Cornerback/Safety, Oklahoma State

I’m not sure this will be their guy, but secondary help and depth is the colts biggest weakness.

Other Possible Target:

Donovan Warren, Cornerback, Michigan

32.  New Orleans Saints: Devin McCourty, Cornerback, Rutgers

Late rising cornerback who may intrigue the Saints with his speed enough to take him here.  Hard to say with this pick, the Saints have so many free agents and its too early to tell who they will lose or bring back.

Early NFL Offseason Signings and Trades

March 6, 2010

Detroit Lions:

The Detroit Lions have had one of the worst defenses in the NFL the last two years.  Today, they are finally making strides to build an NFL defense.  Around 11am the Lions agreed to terms with defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosh.  The deal is reported to be a four year deal for 26 million.  Vanden Bosh was a stand out player at defensive end during Head Coach Jim Schwartz’s tenure as the Tennessee Titans defensive coordinator.  Vanden Bosh can be a catalyst for the defense as well as be a leader on the practice field and game days.  At 31 his best days are behind him, but he can bring much needed experience. Last season the Lions had the worst depth at defensive tackle and although they will probably select a DT in the draft they made a trade today with the Cleveland Browns to obtain Corey Williams and a 7th round pick for their 5th round pick in this years draft.  Williams is a solid player who will clog running lanes and also bring in veteran leadership.  Not a flashy player, but can do the dirty work in the trenches.  Lions also signed wide receiver Nate Burelson.  I would have rather they signed WR Kevin Walter over Nate Burleson, lets hope he earns the 5 year 25 million, with an 11 million dollar signing bonus.  Burleson is a streaky player who I could see the Lions being disappointed in and cutting after one year or forced to keep him because paying him 16 million for one year is too much.  Walter would have come cheaper and put up more consistent production.

New York Giants:

The New York Giants defense went from one of the leagues best and perennially Super Bowl contenders to one of the leagues worst in one season.  Yesterday the Giants took a major step in fixing their secondary by signing safety Antrel Rolle.  Rolle will bring bone crushing hits and leadership to a secondary that could not help get their defense off of the field.

Chicago Bears:

The Chicago Bears coaching and front office staff is facing a do or die season.  Since they traded away their first and second round picks this year it has not been surprising to see them be major players in free agency.  The Bears made the biggest splash by signing highly coveted defensive end Julius Peppers.  Peppers has had up and down seasons, but he has the skill set to completely dominate offensive lines on his own.  The Bears also added veteran running back Chester Taylor from the division rival Vikings.  Not only will he play a major role in the Bears passing game, but he will take a lot of pressure off of young running back Matt Forte who struggled in his second season.

Baltimore Ravens:

Anquan Boldin has requested for a trade from the Arizona Cardinals the previous three seasons, this off season he did not and on the first day of free agency he was traded to the receiver hungry Baltimore Ravens.  The Ravens saw too many drives, especially in the red zone, stall because of a lack of offensive options.  Adding a player of Boldins caliber will make life dramatically easier on QB Joe Flacco and could transform this team into Super Bowl team.  The Arizona Cardinals have enough young talent and actually catch a break by ridding themselves of Boldins contract and obtaining a third and fourth round pick in the process.  The Cardinals have solid young players to play along side star wide out Larry Fitzgerald this trade seemed like a win for both teams.

Carolina Panthers:

Last offseason the Carolina Panthers announced they were morons  and gave interception happy Jake Delhomme a five year 42.5 million dollar extension with 20 million guaranteed.  Yesterday they cut ties with Delhomme after his worst season as a pro which included 18 interceptions and 59.4 quarterback rating, ouch.  The Panthers still owe Delhomme 13 million dollars, double ouch.

Miami Dolphins:

The Dolphins seem to have found their linebacker by signing Karlos Dansby.  They have paid a lot of money, 22 million guaranteed for an aging linebacker.  How many miles Dansby has left will determine how good of a deal this really is.

Atlanta Falcons:

Nothing official, but the Falcons are close to signing stand out cornerback Dunta Robinson.  Robinson has been a shutdown corner for the Houston Texans for the last several years and signing him will address the defenses biggest weakness.  Personally I wanted the Lions to target Robinson, but I am sure he is being swayed by the  Falcons being playoff contenders and the Atlanta night life.

Washington Redskins:

Ever since Owner Daniel Snyder bought the Redskins they have consistently been major players in free agency.  While I have not heard them to be rumored to be close to signing any one there impending moves will be interesting.
